DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY (CHRONIC ILLNESS)

Description:

This book takes the viewer through the day in the life of someone with a chronic illness and spreads awareness about the misconceptions surrounding it. Chronic illness can sometimes come across as invisible because, from the outside, most people with the illness appear normal or even healthy. There are many forms of chronic illness; however, in this book specifically, the viewer will follow a young woman named Ella, on February 8, 2026, who suffers from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).

POTS is a neurological disorder characterized by the dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. When an individual stands up, POTS causes their body to not properly regulate blood flow and causes an increase in heart rate abnormally fast. This leads to dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, lightheadedness, intense shaking, and sometimes fainting.

MCAS is a type of mast cell disease where too many immune cells, which are supposed to protect the body, are misfired and cause allergic-type symptoms such as inflammation, hives, difficulty breathing, and stomach pain. These reactions can escalate to full-blown anaphylactic shock.
